Who Are We?

Haki na Sheria Initiative was founded in 2010 by a team of Somali-Kenyan law students in Garissa County who had experienced, first-hand, the deep injustice faced by communities in Northern Kenya. What began as a small collective speaking out against systemic discrimination has grown, slowly, and with intention, into an organisation rooted in the pursuit of justice and equity.

Our Core Objectives

Haki na Sheria Initiative works to turn rights into lasting outcomes by linking community legal support with litigation and policy reform. Learn more about our programmes below.

Promoting Legal Identity

Promoting Legal Identity

We empower communities by facilitating access to vital legal documents, including birth certificates and national IDs. By securing these fundamentals, we ensure that every individual is recognised by the state and can exercise their full rights as citizens.

Protecting Land and Resources

Protecting Land and Resources

We advocate for the land rights of pastoralist communities in the border regions. Through legal education, legal aid, and policy advocacy, we help families secure their ancestral lands and sustainably manage the natural resources essential to their livelihoods.

Expanding Access to Justice

Expanding Access to Justice

We bridge the gap between vulnerable populations and the legal system. From providing pro bono legal aid to strengthening community-based justice mechanisms, we ensure that the law serves as a shield for the marginalised, not a barrier.

Advancing Human Rights and Equality

Advancing Human Rights and Equality

We challenge systemic discrimination and marginalisation through strategic litigation and policy reform. By monitoring human rights violations and advocating for inclusive governance, we work to ensure that every person, regardless of their background, is treated with dignity and fairness.
